How We Did Things at Furfly
Back when we started Furfly during the web 1.0 days the world was a different place. We ran an all remote company with engineers all over the world and we did it without always connected internet, video feeds, or “Teams”.
Mostly we just ran things via email. And when needed you could just pick up the phone.
And it worked just fine. No need for endless video meetings, daily “stand-ups”, or any of the endless pile of “ceremonies” that most folks nowadays thinks as “agile”.
Eventually, as more folks joined the company, we wrote down our philosophy and outlined the way we work.
It’s worth breaking out our core principles:
- Always be honest with the customer, even when it’s embarrassing
- Admit mistakes before you’re asked, and be modest about working miracles
- Do your best work and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it
- Work hard, but also play hard
- Don’t forget to eat! (don’t laugh, it happens!) And get enough sleep; in the long run it hurts a project if people are too tired for too long.
- Above all, have fun. We’re doing a (usually) fun job for great pay and people all over the world get to use and benefit from our creations. What could be better than that?
